Superheroes and Femme Fatales for the Holidays

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Christmas elf, cheerily hammering away in Santa’s workshop all year? After a year like this, I know what it’s like. So here are some of the Christmas treats I’ve been building and polishing for you.

For the nostalgic Super hero fan in all of us, remembering a time when colorful tights were all the rage, here’s the teaser trailer for a new film I’ve been working on called “Alter Egos” starring many familiar faces from “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead.”

After releasing two fairly mellow acoustic style records, I’ve been making an EP of four songs that is a little bit closer to my first Dopo Yume full length in energy, synthy-ness and bass riffs. But if you still crave the acoustic, don’t worry, because 1 of the 4 is as east village open-mic café-style as I’ve ever done.

It will be released in late Spring, but for now, check out this video from last month in the studio.

Remixing Metaphores: Making of "Shroedinger's Cat" Music Video

I got the call on a Wednesday afternoon that we needed to film the video the following Monday at Union Pool. I was lucky enough to get an awesome, hardworking last minute skeleton crew willing to spend Halloween weekend building sets and doing pre-production. Sean and Charlotte did all the historical costumes and took care of casting themselves, which made it possible to put it together so quickly. Below is a video filmed on the set and some story boards I drew. We had only 8 hours to load in and film every shot, clean up and load out before Union Pool opened to the public.

It was a hot day in august. The 27th, I think. We shot for 16 hours in four different locations in manhattan. The budget was 1000 dollars total. Below is a video of interview footage cut together with onset photographs.

Slush Puppy Music has released a special edition of Dopo Yume’s 2002 record “True Romance” with 4 never before heard b-sides.

At the time of its original release, it was Daily Candy’s selection of the day.

Several of the songs on the record were featured on the HBO show, the Neistat Brothers, including disco pop ballad, “The Postcard” which plays at the end of Episode Two.

The music video for “The Postcard” shot in 2002, starred Bijou Phillips.

Recently, I talked with the director, Michele Civetta, and made a little video with behind the scenes footage shot back in 2002.

Someone Loves You

In this homage to "The Parallax View" and Facebook induced psychosis, the hero is a manifestation of our lost culture, isolated by years of social networking online. When a small group of young rebels infiltrate his loneliness and expose him to an explosive, emotional montage from the 1974 thriller, "The Parallax View" our hero - and therefore the very fabric our existence - collapses under the glaring contradictions and neurosis of his own (and our own) mentality. In a nutshell, so pretentious it's sincere, but so sincere it's almost pretentious.

Making "Free Love," Not War

In March, 2010, we filmed a music video in Long Island. Fortunately, Fred Brehm was there to capture the madness and mayhem of the shoot, the dark circles, the general fog of fatigue and oddly worded explanations of concepts, that goes with four days of no sleep.

I was extremely happy to work with director/ FX mistro Gary Breslin and his company PanOptic on our third project together. They also did the FX on "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead" and Gary co-directed the animated music video for Mark Ronson’s instrumental ode to 1980s video games - “Circuit Breaker.” Also mad props to Saul Metnik, the cinematographer, producer Forrest Heidel and the dancers: Ashley Wallace, Kimberly Bellinger, Chloe Douglas and Christina Williams.

Love of the Free Variety

Gary Breslin, a director and fx master I worked with on the video for Mark Ronson’s “Circuit Breaker,” directed a video for my song “Free Love” off my new album, “Search Party.” I stayed in front of the camera this time around with Breslin directing.

“Free Love” chronicles the late-night adventure of a gazelle-like blonde who sneaks out of her boyfriend’s bed and winds up in the middle of a choreographed, psychedelic dance routine with a number of equally graceful, somewhat trippy, ladies. Waking up in an empty bed, her boyfriend (played by me) sets out into the woods looking for her.

Shot on the Canon 5D digital camera, featuring gorgeous cinematography by Saul Metnik, who gives the live action video an almost fantastical look thanks to the ultra-vivid colors and image clarity.

Breslin’s company PanOptic did the special effects for “Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Undead.”

Yesterday I met Teeko, a master turntablist from the Bay Area, who’s playing on some of Mark Ronson’s new songs. He came over and we filmed his amazingly fast hands in front of my makeshift bedroom green screen. The video’s gonna be for a top secret new Mark Ronson track.

Cigarettes: Not Just Blowing Smoke

"Cigarettes" - one of the two songs written by Jordan Galland for Daniel Merriweather's hit solo record "Love and War" (the other song being "Live by Night") has been picked as the critic's choice of songs to download for People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly.

"Cigarettes" was also highlighted in a great concert review of Merriweather for Variety.
